Captain Jarrad Berkihiser began his career in 1994 after serving four years in the United States Air Force Security Police.  He was assigned as a patrol officer until 1998 when he was transferred to the Drug Suppression Unit where he and eight other officers conducted street level narcotics, prostitution, and nuisance crime investigations and prosecutions.  He has been a member of the Lancaster City now Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team since 1995 and currently holds a Deputy Commander position on the team overseeing team tactical operations during barricaded gunman, hostage, and high risk warrant situations. 

In 2002 Berkihiser was transferred to the Criminal Investigative Division where he was a member of the newly formed Auto Theft Unit and after a several months he was transferred to the Pattern and Violent Gang Crime Unit, now known as the Violent Crime Unit where his specialty was identifying and investigating pattern robberies throughout the city and county.  He also investigated homicides and other violent crimes. 

In January 2007 Berkihiser was promoted to sergeant and transferred to the patrol division as a platoon sergeant where he supervised platoon officers during their shift.  In October 2007 Berkihiser became the Community Policing sergeant where he supervised the School Resource Officers, the TEAM Officer, and a civilian crime prevention liaison.  He also assumed the duties as department Press Information Officer.  He also became the officer in charge of the department’s honor guard.    

In September 2008 he returned to platoon sergeant duties until June of 2009 when he was transferred back to the Criminal Investigative Division as a Detective Sergeant of the Violent Crime Unit where he investigated and supervised violent crime investigations until July 2010.  He was then transferred to the Training Sergeant position and became responsible for the overall training of the Bureau’s Officers in firearms, use of force, police academy, first aid, and mandatory update training.  Berkihiser is certified to teach firearms, defensive tactics, and general police academy courses. 

In January 2012 Berkihiser was promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned as the Detective Lieutenant to supervise the Special Investigations Unit.  He supervised, managed, and investigated child abuse cases, sexual assault cases, and homicides or other major cases. 

Berkihiser is originally from Womelsdorf, PA where he began service to his community as a volunteer firefighter.  In 1988 he graduated from Conrad Weiser High School and entered the United States Air Force where he began his career in law enforcement.  In 1993 after honorably serving his country he became the Loss Prevention Manager for a Boscov’s Department Store in the Reading area until he was hired by the Lancaster Bureau of Police. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Organizational Leadership in Law Enforcement and a Master of Arts degree in Management with a concentration in Organizational Leadership through American Military University.  Jarrad his happily married with two daughters, enjoys spending time with his family, doing crossfit, and playing sports.  He coached youth soccer and basketball for several years. 

Berkihiser was awarded the commendation for Bravery, Legion of Merit and the Henry J. Kauffman award twice during his career.  He has received several other commendations and letters of appreciation from other agencies and the community.  He is proud to be a member of the Lancaster City Police and is committed to the profession and serving the residents and visitors of Lancaster.
