Camera Registry Program

1 July 2014 by Todd Umstead

Do you own a surveillance camera that records video footage? Do you want to help the police solve crimes? The Lancaster City Bureau of Police is pleased to announce a new feature on our website ( that allows Lancaster City business owners and citizens to provide us with the locations of their surveillance cameras.

By clicking on the CameraRegistrySidebarButtonBackground button in the lower right corner of our Home Page, camera owners can fill out a form with their location, contact information and technical details about their surveillance camera system. This will assist us in solving crimes by providing investigators with the location of cameras, who to contact in the event footage needs viewed, and how long the video is stored/saved. The registration form can also be accessed here:

This program is modeled after a similar program that has been successfully utilized by the Philadelphia Police Department for several years. Registration is entirely voluntary and all information gathered is reserved for official use and will not be released to any member of the general public or press. The Lancaster City Police Department will in no way utilize or attempt to obtain or view any live footage/feeds directly from cameras owned by registrants. We are only interested in RECORDED footage. While this program is mainly for Lancaster City businesses and residents, we also welcome any information about cameras located on properties along the boundary lines of municipalities bordering the city.

The goal of the Camera Registry program is to deter crime and promote public safety through collaboration between the Lancaster City Police Department and the community we serve. The Lancaster City Police Department greatly appreciates your participation in this community partnership.
